Life’s a Plastic Ride!

It’s a plastic world we are living in. First the money goes plastic, now you go on plastic!

For those who are concerned about where to dump plastic waste, here’s good news. The BMP (Bangalore Mahanagara Palike) has come up with an interesting project along with the assistance of World Bank, to reuse plastic waste on roads, which is supposed to be more durable than the traditional roads.

The Bangalore-based K K Plastic Waste Management Ltd (KKPWM) has developed the technology that turns plastic waste into a polyblend, used for laying roads. It takes around two tonnes of plastic to lay every kilometre of road. About 8% of recycled plastic is added to the bitumen mixture to lay roads, which are durable and strong even two years after they are laid. The cost of plastic road is marginally higher, but, according to KKPWM Managing Director Ahmed Khan, ‘is compensated by its durability and eco friendly properties.’

Hybrid Cars Enter Indian Roads

Jyothi Kiran, Friday, June 20, 2008 | Category: Industry        Comments (2)

As hybrid cars enter the Indian market, it raises two prime concerns namely money and infrastructure. Many middle class Indians who are green in their thinking are not green enough in their pockets. They can’t afford the hybrid cars which are over priced. As of now only the elite can ride the eco friendly cars.

For the hybrid cars to make it on the Indian roads, the government has to reduce the excise and custom taxes and duties. The infrastructure also needs to be improved with more CNG/LPG filling stations, electric charging stations, etc. With better infrastructure and facilities to run hybrid vehicles, there is no reason why India should not enjoy the benefit of hybrid vehicles.

Meanwhile many nanos will crowd the already crowded streets and pollute the already polluted cities.

Ranbaxy Sets a Buzz in the Drug Market

With the Japanese buyout of Ranbaxy, Indian pharmacy companies are suddenly in spot light. What will happen to the generic drug industry when companies cash out like Ranbaxy? And how will it impact the third world which depends on generic drugs supplied at cheaper prices for treating its patients, especially AIDS, cancer and other such deadly diseases?

Though the medical representative on the street is least bothered about the effect it will have on the market as “the generic market is too crowded to be affected by a single buy out” many in the industry are concerned that the Ranbaxy sale could impact smaller drug makers. Many wish Ranbaxy had not cashed out but should have set an example as the last man standing in the world of mega mergers and deals, as “it will create intense pressure on other pharma companies, making them vulnerable to hostile takeovers,” says D G Shah, secretary general of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance.

‘Mother Ships’ Use Less Chemicals in Cancer Treatment

Jyothi Kiran, Monday, June 16, 2008 | Category: Industry        Comments (0)

Dr. Michael Sailor of UC San Diego, renowned for his work on “smart dust” has come up with an exciting  concept called “mother ships,” to be used in the treatment of cancer.  According to him, “mother ships,” are the nanostructures that encapsulate chemotherapeutic agents. They allow us to deliver these agents exactly where we want them, resulting in using much smaller doses of chemicals than traditional methods”.

I am sure cancer patients will welcome this new technology because,  more than the pain of cancer, it is undergoing the chemical treatment that is more traumatic.

Read further if you want to know more about Dr. Sailor’s research on smart dust.
