Cleaning stained upholstery is not only cumbersome but expensive as well since it is a recurring process. Imagine large seating areas such as football stadia, hospitals, conference halls, airports, casinos, theatres…Now imagine stains on it: coffee, juice, soda, beer and wine, add food stains like tomato sauce, mustard, chocolate, cheese, chilly and samosa,  and other stains such as sweat, paint, pee, and blood, and we have a mega cleaning challenge. But thanks to nanotechnology in the making of extreme performance upholstery, now the toughest stains are simply washed off with water.

The first application of nanotech based extreme performance upholstery was at Toyota Center, home of the NBA Houston Rockets in 2001. Since then, many sports arena and other commercial industry applications have upgraded to nanotech upholstery. Add to this, the textile revolution in personal wear such as wrinkle free khakis, stain resistant shirts, deo and static-free apparal.

The pioneering rsearch and development of applying nanowhiskers to commercial interior textiles was introduced by Designtex in 2001 with Nano-tex, the developers of the technology. Engineered clusters of molecules with stain repelling properties were permanently attached to 100-percent recycled polyester panel and upholstery fabrics, making for enhanced stain resistance and easy cleanability…more

It hurts when you find stains on your favorite dress and you put all your efforts to remove that. At last something came that helps get rid of it.

There’s a lot of nanotech application in the textile industry. Apart from extreme performance upholstery, even personal wear is going through a revolution. But, a lot of research is still needed. For instance, Madhura Garments came up with spill proof white shirt that didn’t go well with the Indian customers as it was too hot for the Indian climate, and also it can’t handle more than 30 washes, but the wrinkle free trousers are doing well in the market.
