Remote Patient Monitoring a booming Industry

The healthcare industry is booming with innovative products especially in the remote patient monitoring market. The latest remote patient monitoring solution is x73 manager USB reference system by Wipro healthcare division. The solution supports blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, weighing scales, thermometers and glucometers.

The Wipro reference system x73 manager helps clinical diagnostic applications to collect vital medical data from homecare devices and bed-side monitors through application programming interfaces (API’s) thereby forming a critical enabler for the fast growing remote patient monitoring system, home healthcare and e-health markets.

According to Manimaran Rajakannu, GM, Medical Devices business of Wipro Technologies, the solution is both transport as well as platform agnostic. It goes beyond USB and includes Bluetooth over HDP. It is capable of running on Embedded Linux, Android, Blackberry and other mobile platforms in addition to windows platform. This, he believes will act as a catalyst to provide faster solutions to customers in the patient-monitoring segment.

Wipro healthcare solution was recently awarded Global Certification by Continua Health Alliance, a non-profit, collaborative industry organization dedicated to defining technology standards specifically for healthcare solutions. It was a historic moment for Wipro as it became the first Healthcare IT Services organization to be certified for IEEE 11073 (x73) based software reference system for five certified device classes.

“It is a moment of immense pride for Wipro because apart from the certification, the tool kit has also been chosen to be a part of the Continua reference design underlining the quality and reliability of the solution,” said Manimaran Rajakannu, general manager, Medical Devices business of Wipro Technologies.

The remote patient monitoring market is expected to grow at a five-year compound annual growth rate of 56 percent according to market analyst Datamonitor. That far surpasses 9.9 percent growth projected for the clinical telehealth market. Datamonitor expects to see the global telehealth market to hit $8 billion or more by 2012.

Remote monitoring systems and tele healthcare solutions are not a replacement for professional treatment, but systems that make healthcare processes efficient. For instance, a JAMA study reports that the rate of in-hospital and 30-day mortality has decreased, while the rate of hospital readmission and discharge to skilled nursing facilities has increased.
